Cal Hampton is Jason’s best friend in GTA 6, and probably the funniest character Rockstar has shown so far. He also works with Brian Heder, but he’d much rather stay home with a few beers, listening in on Coast Guard radio and reading conspiracy theories. (Confirmed by Rockstar)
Last updated: 14 Oct 2026. For this page I’ve used Rockstar’s official GTA VI website, the trailers and the Extended Look, plus a few trusted gaming sites, which I link to where I use them. Theories are marked clearly, and there’s nothing from leaks.

Who is Cal Hampton in GTA 6?
Cal is one of the eight GTA 6 characters Rockstar has given an official profile. His profile opens with a question that sums him up perfectly: “What if everything on the internet was true?” (Confirmed)
This is what Rockstar has actually confirmed:
- Friends with: Jason Duval. (Confirmed)
- Works with: Brian Heder, as “a fellow associate of Brian’s”. (Confirmed)
- Favourite place: home, snooping on Coast Guard radio with a few beers and some private browser tabs open. (Confirmed)
- Outlook: Rockstar says he’s “at the low tide of America and happy there”. (Confirmed)
- The catch: his friend Jason has bigger plans. (Confirmed)
Rockstar gave Cal two lines that had me laughing:
“There are way too many birds flying around in perfect formation.”
“The psychopaths are in charge. Get used to it.”
If you’ve spent any time online, you’ve met a Cal. That’s the joke, and I think it’s exactly the kind of satire GTA has always been good at.
Every Cal Hampton scene shown so far
Cal mostly shows up next to Jason. I went through Rockstar’s screenshots and Trailer 2, and these are his scenes so far.
| Where | What we see | Label |
|---|---|---|
| Rockstar screenshot | Cal lying on a pink flamingo float in a pool, surrounded by floating cans | Shown |
| Rockstar screenshot | Cal and another man playing mini golf on a course decorated with fake alligators | Shown |
| Rockstar screenshot | Jason and Cal playing pool at a busy bar | Shown |
| Rockstar screenshot | Cal and Jason walking side by side, each carrying a duffel bag | Shown |
| Rockstar screenshots (Jason’s profile) | Jason and Cal fishing on a boat, Cal looking through binoculars; Jason and Cal having beers at a bar | Shown |
| Trailer 2 (May 2025) | Cal appears with Jason in the Keys, including at a bar and around Brian’s marina | Shown |
The Trailer 2 locations come from GTA Intel’s Cal profile, which names the bar as The Rusty Anchor. The duffel bag shot is the one I keep looking at. Cal says he’s happy at home, but there he is, carrying a bag next to Jason. That’s the “bigger plans” Rockstar talks about. (My reading, Not confirmed)
Cal Hampton vs Lester Crest: is Cal the new “guy in the chair”?
Some sites, including GTA Intel, compare Cal with Lester from GTA 5, the friend who works behind a screen. I can see why, but I don’t think they’re the same type at all.
| Lester Crest (GTA 5) | Cal Hampton (GTA 6) | |
|---|---|---|
| Skills | Genius planner and hacker | Listens to Coast Guard radio, reads conspiracy sites |
| Attitude | Ambitious, plans big scores | Happy at “the low tide of America” |
| Why he’s involved | Runs the heists | Dragged in by his friend Jason |
| Role | Heist planner | Jason’s friend and Brian’s associate |
Verdict: Lester wanted the big score. Cal just wants to be left alone. If he ends up in the chair, I think it’ll be because Jason talked him into it, and that’s a much more fun setup.
Fan theories about Cal
Because Cal looks like the loyal, funny friend, some fans online have guessed he could get a romance storyline, or that he might not make it to the end of the story. GTA Intel mentions both ideas in its Cal profile. None of it comes from Rockstar, so treat it as fan talk until launch. (Fan theory, Not confirmed)
What we still don’t know about Cal
- Whether he helps on missions, and how. (Not confirmed)
- How he feels about Lucia. (Not confirmed)
- How deep his work with Brian goes. (Not confirmed)
- Who voices him. (Not confirmed)
My take
Cal might end up being my favourite side character. Every GTA has the funny friend who makes the drives between missions fun, and Cal already feels like he’ll be that guy. I love that Rockstar made him happy where he is, because it makes his friendship with Jason more interesting. Jason wants out, Cal wants nothing to change. I can already imagine the car conversations about birds flying in formation. I’ll update this page once the game is out on 19 November.
