GTA 6 map vs GTA 5: Rockstar says Leonida is about twice the size of GTA 5’s map, with far more detail and many more enterable buildings. (Confirmed) That sounds like the headline, but in my opinion the bigger change is how much is packed into that space. This is an opinion piece: the facts are labelled, and the views are mine.

What we actually know about the GTA 6 map size
Here is everything official, so the rest of this piece starts from facts:
| GTA 5 (2013) | GTA 6 (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Los Santos and Blaine County | Leonida, including Vice City |
| Size | Rockstar never gave an official figure | About twice GTA 5, per Rockstar (Confirmed) |
| Regions | One big city, desert, mountains, coast | Six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga (Confirmed) |
| Wildlife | A small set of animals | 170+ species (Confirmed) |
| Weather | Rain, fog, thunderstorms | Local weather, including hurricanes (Confirmed) |
The size comes from Rockstar North’s Aaron Garbut in Game Informer’s GTA 6 cover story in late September. He also said the team “hit a critical mass” with interiors, so more buildings can be entered. Rockstar has not published the area in square miles, so treat any exact number you see online as an estimate. For a region-by-region tour, see our GTA 6 map guide.
Why I don’t think size is the headline
Twice as big makes a great thumbnail. But anyone who has spent time in GTA 5 knows the map’s size was never the problem. The problem was how much of it you actually used.
Los Santos itself still holds up: busy streets, traffic, people doing their own thing. But large parts of Blaine County were somewhere you drove through, not somewhere you stopped. Beautiful to look at, but often empty once the mission ended.
When I played GTA 5, I used to go to the outskirts a lot. I like the area outside Los Santos, but it gets so repetitive and has no activities after a while. It’s not boring, just pretty typical.
So when I hear “twice as big”, my first question isn’t “how many square miles?” It’s “how much of it will I want to stop in?”
GTA 6 map vs GTA 5: where I think GTA 6 wins
What Rockstar has shown so far points the right way:
- Interiors. If many more buildings can be entered, the map stops being scenery and becomes places. That alone could matter more than the extra size.
- Crowds. The new screenshots and the Extended Look show busy streets, traffic jams and groups of people actually hanging out. That is the “density” Garbut talks about.
- Variety. GTA 5 had city, desert and mountain. Leonida has a city, an island chain, swamps, a run-down coast, farm country and a national park. Six different moods instead of three.
- Nature that does something. 170+ animal species and hurricanes mean the countryside can surprise you, not just fill space between two missions.

Where I’m worried
I’m not handing out a perfect score before launch:
- Travel time. A map twice the size means longer drives. In GTA 5 the main shortcut was a taxi ride; I hope GTA 6 gets the balance right. Previews mention a rideshare app, which could help.
- Empty regions. If even one of the six regions ends up as “drive-through country”, the size boast will feel hollow.
- Performance. More detail everywhere asks a lot of the consoles. One preview reported 30 fps on a standard PS5 (Reported). Rockstar hasn’t confirmed it, but it’s worth watching. More in GTA 6 PS5 or Xbox.
While playing RDR2, I enjoyed the travel because of the scenery and the environment. While playing GTA 5, sometimes I missed the fast travel thing because there are no activities. What I expect from GTA 6 is that whenever I go outside, I want to see something new or experience something new, and while travelling, I want to come across different things.
My verdict: GTA 6 map vs GTA 5
On paper, GTA 6 wins easily: bigger, more varied, and more alive. But my verdict on the map won’t be about its size. It’ll be about whether Leonida feels lived-in from one coast to the other, the way the best streets of Los Santos did.
Everything Rockstar has shown, and the way it keeps talking about density rather than square miles, makes me optimistic. I’ll test it properly from launch day on 19 November and update this piece with what I find.
My take
Twice the size of GTA 5 sounds huge, but size alone never excited me. What I loved in RDR2 was that every corner had something: a stranger, a small story, an animal, a secret. If Leonida has that kind of detail, with more interiors and more to do, it will be the best map Rockstar has made. I’ll be exploring before I even finish the first few missions.
