GTA 6 real life locations are easy to spot if you know Miami. Rockstar says Leonida is inspired by Florida (Confirmed), and the trailers show near-copies of Ocean Drive’s Art Deco hotels, the Venetian and MacArthur causeways, the Miami Heat’s arena, the Everglades and the Florida Keys. (Shown) Rockstar renames everything, so every real-world match below is what reporters and fans have spotted, not an official list.
The best breakdown came from Axios Miami the day Trailer 1 dropped, with help from local preservationist Daniel Ciraldo. I have added what Dexerto and Reddit fans found since.

Which city is GTA 6 based on?
GTA 6 is based on Miami. Its main city, Vice City, is Rockstar’s version of Miami, and the wider state of Leonida is based on Florida. (Confirmed) It’s the same city the original Vice City copied back in 2002, but this time it’s a modern, present-day Miami, and the map stretches out to the Everglades, the Keys and Florida’s smaller towns.

The rest of Leonida in real life
Outside Vice City, the regions follow real Florida too. Rockstar’s own descriptions, quoted by Game Informer, point the way: the Keys have “dangerous waters”, Grassrivers has predators deadlier than its alligators, and Mount Kalaga is for “prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails”. (Confirmed)
| GTA 6 region | Real place it looks like | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| Leonida Keys | Florida Keys | Axios Miami, Dexerto |
| Grassrivers | The Everglades, with airboats, flamingos and alligators | Axios Miami |
| Port Gellhorn | Possibly Panama City on the Gulf Coast | Dexerto (tentative) |
| Ambrosia | Possibly Clewiston and its sugar refinery | Dexerto (tentative) |
| Mount Kalaga | North Florida forests and trails | Our reading of Rockstar’s description |
Dexerto also spotted a version of the Keys’ Rain Barrel Village, with a whale statue where the real one has a giant lobster. (Not confirmed) Full region details are in our GTA 6 map guide.
GTA 6 real life locations in the launch trailer
The 15 October launch trailer added a few more GTA 6 real life locations, mostly in the Keys: (Shown)
- The drive into the Keys. It opens with a pickup towing a jet ski past a welcome sign and boats on blue water, just like the Overseas Highway into the Florida Keys. (Shown)
- Keys road signs. Signs point to Goose Key, and TechWiser also spotted a Catalan Key sign, according to Eastern Eye. (Shown)
- A real Miami phone number. The phone number at Brian’s Marina starts with 786, a real Miami area code. (Shown) Every detail from that opening is in my launch trailer analysis.
- Florida beach life. Packed beaches, a biplane trailing pink smoke over the sand, and a green iguana, one of South Florida’s most famous invasive animals. (Shown)
Small real-world details fans noticed
- Police colours. Axios says the in-game police cars share colour schemes with Miami-Dade Police and Broward County Sheriff cruisers. (Not confirmed) More on how the police work in our GTA 6 wanted system guide.
- A gator in a convenience store. Axios also pointed out the Trailer 1 shot of an alligator wandering into a store, a very Florida headline. (Shown)
- A real penthouse. On Reddit, a fan matched the luxury apartment and pool in Trailer 1 to the Tresor Tower penthouse in Miami Beach, as Dexerto reported. (Not confirmed)
Why GTA 6 isn’t a 1:1 copy of Miami
Rockstar never builds a real city street by street. It squeezes the best-known places together, renames them and adds its own jokes, which is why the Breakwater becomes the Boardwalk and E11EVEN becomes NINE 1 NINE. (My reading) So you will recognise Miami everywhere, but don’t expect to use a real map to find your way.

My take
I have played GTA since the original Vice City, and it is wild to see how far the city has come. Back then it was a cartoon of 1980s Miami. Now it looks like the real place, down to the hotel signs and the beach umbrellas. Spotting GTA 6 real life locations is half the fun of every new trailer, and after launch I want to drive Ocean Drive myself and see how many more I can find.
