The GTA 6 wanted system goes up to six stars, one more than GTA 5. Police react only to crimes that someone sees or a camera catches, and they track your outfit, face and vehicle. To escape, you change what they’re looking for: swap cars, change clothes or get a haircut. (Six stars confirmed in the Extended Look; other details reported from previews)

Six stars are back in the GTA 6 wanted system
The Extended Look shows the wanted meter reaching six stars during a chase with a police helicopter. (Confirmed) GTA 5 capped it at five. In previews, six stars was described as an all-out manhunt. (Reported) You can watch the chase on Rockstar’s YouTube channel.

Police need a witness
According to hands-on previews, police don’t learn about a crime by magic. Someone has to see it, or a security system has to catch it. (Reported) That makes quiet, planned jobs easier than in past GTA games, and loud ones on busy streets riskier.
What the police know about you
In the Extended Look, small icons sit under the wanted stars. Previews say they show what the police have on you (Reported):
- Your appearance: face and hair
- Your outfit: what you’re wearing
- Your vehicle: the car or bike you were seen in
Stars shown as outlines mean the police don’t have a confirmed description yet.
How to lose a wanted level: 6 ways
The idea is simple: change whatever the police are looking for. Methods shown or described so far:
- Swap or ditch your vehicle. Rockstar’s footage shows a car being set on fire to get rid of it.
- Change your outfit. A full change works; swapping one accessory doesn’t.
- Change your hair at a barber or salon.
- Wear a mask during the crime so cameras and witnesses can’t see your face.
- Shoot out pursuers’ tyres, shown working in the Extended Look.
- Hide. Lying low, including in a car boot, was shown.
Previews also say an area can stay under police watch after you escape, so going straight back there is risky. (Reported) Learn the escape routes in our GTA 6 map guide.
Criminal Profile: the long-term record
Separate from the GTA 6 wanted system, the Criminal Profile tracks how Jason and Lucia behave across the whole game. It replaces Red Dead Redemption 2’s honour system.
- Pointless violence and destruction can damage it.
- Violence a mission or robbery needs doesn’t count against you.
- Clean, efficient robberies can build the couple’s reputation.
- Unlike wanted stars, it doesn’t reset.

My take
I love causing chaos in GTA and then trying to escape. That’s half the fun. A six-star wanted level sounds intense, and I’m curious how smart the police will be this time. In GTA 5, escaping was sometimes too easy. If GTA 6 makes it harder and more realistic, it will make every chase more exciting. Expect me to test every escape route the moment I get my hands on it.
We’ll test the GTA 6 wanted system ourselves after 19 November and update this guide.
