The GTA 6 weapon limit means you can always carry two concealed handguns, plus up to two long guns: one on your back and one in your hand. (Confirmed by Rockstar’s Rob Nelson; long-gun details Reported) Extra guns have to be stored elsewhere, much like Red Dead Redemption 2. In my opinion it’s the best change Rockstar has made to GTA’s combat in years.
Where these facts come from: Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson in interviews, the official Extended Look and trailers, and the released GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Nothing here comes from leaks.

The GTA 6 weapon limit is the change I’ve been hoping for since I first played Red Dead Redemption 2. In GTA 5, Michael, Franklin and Trevor could pull a rocket launcher, a minigun and twenty other guns out of thin air. It was fun, but it never made sense. GTA 6 is finally fixing that, and here’s why I think it’s the right call.
What Rockstar has confirmed about the GTA 6 weapon limit
Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson explained the new system in an interview with TGG. (Confirmed)
- “You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want.”
- People around you react to weapons now. A long gun on your back “should be fine”, but one in your hand makes people move away.
- He was blunt about GTA 5: “you can pull out a shotgun from nowhere in front of people”, and that “doesn’t work here.”
Preview reports add that you can carry up to two long guns, one on your back and one in your hand, and that heavier firepower has to be stored elsewhere. (Reported) In the Extended Look, Jason Duval grabs a rifle from a downed enemy mid-fight. (Confirmed, shown) That moment shows combat is now about using what’s around you. GTA 6 vs GTA 5 vs RDR2 weapons: side by side
| GTA 5 | Red Dead Redemption 2 | GTA 6 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guns carried at once | Every gun you own | 2 sidearms + 2 long arms | 2 concealed handguns + up to 2 long guns |
| Where the rest go | Nowhere, all in the wheel | On your horse | Stored elsewhere (Reported: vehicles) |
| NPCs react to visible guns | Mostly only when you aim | Yes | Yes (Confirmed) |
| Pick up enemy guns | Yes | Yes | Yes (Shown) |
| Ammo limits | Very high | Limited by what you carry | Not confirmed |
Verdict: GTA 6 sits much closer to RDR2 than to GTA 5. It keeps GTA’s quick access to handguns but turns heavy weapons into a choice, which takes the best part of each game.

Why I prefer the GTA 6 weapon limit
It makes you plan. In RDR2, choosing which two long guns to take before a mission made every fight feel like my decision. A sniper rifle for a quiet approach, or a shotgun for close work? GTA 5 never asked that question, because you always had everything.
Missions get better. I’ve built my own custom missions in GTA 5, and the hardest part was always balance. When the player has every weapon, there’s no tension. A limit forces mission designers, and players, to think, which is good news for GTA 6 missions.
The world feels real. Vice City, in the state of Leonida, is supposed to feel alive. If walking down Ocean Drive with a rifle in your hand makes people step away and maybe call the police, the city feels like a real place. That links straight into the new GTA 6 wanted system.
Picking up guns becomes exciting. When you can’t carry everything, grabbing an enemy’s rifle in the middle of a shootout feels like a real moment, like Jason does in the Extended Look.
Verdict: for missions, tension and a believable world, the GTA 6 weapon limit beats GTA 5’s bottomless arsenal. GTA 5 still wins for pure chaos.
What still worries me
I’m not saying it’s perfect. A few things need to be done well:
- Getting to your stored guns. If switching loadouts means a long walk back to a car, it could get annoying fast. (Not confirmed how it works)
- Ammo. I’d like ammo to be limited too, not GTA 5’s huge reserves, but Rockstar hasn’t said anything about it. (Not confirmed)
- Chaos players. Plenty of fans love GTA 5’s “everything at once” madness. I hope there’s still room for that, maybe in GTA Online.
My take
For me, the GTA 6 weapon limit is a sign that Rockstar is bringing RDR2’s best ideas into GTA. I love exploring and I love missions done properly, and both get better when your choices matter. Two hidden pistols and two long guns is enough to cause plenty of trouble. It just means you have to think first, and I think that’s exactly what GTA needed after all these years.
