If that rumoured $1.5 billion were true, it would be about ₹14,240 crore at today’s exchange rate. Below I’ve converted every number floating around into rupees, explained where each one comes from, and compared it with things we know in India.

What Rockstar actually said about the GTA 6 budget
In Bloomberg’s behind-the-scenes report, Jason Schreier spoke to Rockstar’s head of publishing, Jennifer Kolbe. She pushed back on the $1.5 billion figure but didn’t give a real number, and Rockstar still won’t say what the game cost. So any site that tells you the exact GTA 6 budget in rupees is guessing. What we can do is convert the numbers people talk about and be clear about where they come from.
Where the $1.5 billion rumour came from
The $1.5 billion number has been repeated so often that many people think it’s official. It isn’t. It’s often compared with the cost of building Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which is part of why it went viral. Rockstar has never published it, and its head of publishing has now pushed back on it. The $3 billion estimate from Rockstar’s UK accounts
A bigger estimate comes from Saukko505, a creator on YouTube and X. According to Journal du Geek, he went through Rockstar’s public UK financial filings and estimated about $3.6 billion of spending between April 2019 and launch, most of it linked to GTA 6. (Reported estimate)
That’s about ₹28,479 crore or more. But he himself is unsure whether the filings cover every studio, and the same spending also paid for other things, like GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. So treat it as a rough upper guess, not a budget.

GTA 5’s $265 million figure was reported by The Scotsman in 2013, via CinemaBlend, and included marketing. It wasn’t an official Rockstar number either. (Reported) Even the rumour puts GTA 6 at more than five times GTA 5. I’ve converted GTA 5 at today’s rate so the comparison is fair, even though the rupee was much stronger in 2013.
Why GTA 6 cost so much
Bloomberg’s report explains where the money likely went, even without a total: (Reported)
- Staff: Rockstar grew from 2,441 people in 2018 to 4,711 across 12 offices.
- Time: research began in 2015 and full development in 2018, so about eight years.
- A new studio: Rockstar built a Los Angeles studio just to write and animate the huge number of characters.
- India: coverage of the report says Rockstar has also expanded significantly in India, where it has a studio.

Putting the GTA 6 budget in Indian terms
Numbers this big are hard to picture, so here’s the rumoured $1.5 billion (₹14,240 crore) next to things we know:
- Chandrayaan-3: ISRO’s Moon mission cost around ₹615 crore. The rumoured GTA 6 budget is more than 20 times that. (Reported cost)

Will GTA 6 make its budget back?
Almost certainly, but that’s my view, not a fact. GTA 5 has sold more than 200 million copies over its life, according to Take-Two’s earnings reports, and GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated game launches ever. (My reading) Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t published any GTA 6 sales targets.
My take
As an Indian GTA fan, I find the rupee numbers mind-blowing. Even the rumour means one video game cost more than 20 Moon missions. But I also like that Rockstar didn’t confirm a number. Whether it’s ₹14,000 crore or ₹28,000 crore doesn’t change the game I’ll play on 19 November. What I care about is what the money built, and from the Bloomberg report it sounds like most of it went into people and time, which is exactly where I want it.
